J. Martin Diggs Memorial Scholarship

The J. Martin Diggs Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by the family of J. Martin Diggs. The scholarship serves as a memorial to a man who served his community for over 60 years as a minister and for 30 years as a teacher and administrator (including Assistant Superintendent) in the Mathews County public school system. The purpose of this scholarship is to support post-secondary educational scholarships for qualifying graduates of Mathews County and Gloucester County public high schools. The recipient of the scholarship will be a student who demonstrates a capacity for fairness, compassion, and concern for others – ideals for which Martin Diggs stood for during his lifetime.

Eligibility

An eligible student must be a senior attending Mathews County or Gloucester County public schools.

An eligible student must demonstrate volunteer and civic involvement and good citizenship.

An eligible student must be a candidate for high school graduation at the end of the current academic year, and plan to enroll in an accredited 2-year or 4-year college, university or community college in the continental United States the following academic year.

Selection Criteria

Involvement in extracurricular and community service activities.

Academic achievement based on grade point average and SAT scores.

Commitment to family, religious values and school life based on personal statement.

Faculty or guidance counselor recommendation.

Personal Statement Topic: Describe what it means to be a good citizen.
