The Gay Family Gives Back During the Holidays

The Kingsbery W. and Carla C. Gay Family Fund was established in 2016 by the Gays’ four children – Tom, Bery, Bill and Charlotte. Together, they were looking for a way to honor their parents’ memory and their love of arts and music, the Chesapeake Bay and education, especially in the arts. They realized that creating a donor advised fund through the Community Foundation was the perfect way to accomplish their goals. In addition, the fund will allow them to pass along King and Carla’s memories and ideals to future generations and to promote selflessness and philanthropy.

The family meets every  December, often coinciding with their family gift exchange, to present, discuss and make grant decisions. Their goal is to ensure the grants will be impactful to the organizations. The fund was designed so that each sibling’s family has an equal amount to draw on for grants, with an additional portion allotted for the entire family to recommend as a group.

Tom Gay shares, “This is a great way for family members to interact with each other and hear about nonprofits and worthy causes they may not be aware of. The chance to participate in grantmaking at the holidays reinforces the warmth and inner joy that comes from giving and sharing.
